4 Tips to Defeat Artist’s Block

Some days, making art is easy. You feel inspired and energetic, practically bursting with creativity. Other days, making art can feel impossible. It can leave you wondering if you will ever create anything ever again, or if you will always feel like you are wandering through a fog, devoid of inspiration. Try not to worry too much—there are plenty of ways you can get those creative juices flowing again. Here are a few tips to help you find the inspiration you need to get rid of your artist’s block.

Take a Walk

Sitting in one place worrying or overthinking will not help get rid of your artist’s block. Get out of your head for a while and head into nature to recharge. Going outside on a little adventure can help clear your head and make room for fresh ideas. Whether you go for a short walk around the block or take a hike through the woods, you’re almost sure to find something that will get you back on track and ready to make art again.

Look at Art

Stop looking at and fretting over your own art for a little while—go look at someone else’s. Better yet, look at art you are unfamiliar with. You can certainly look to your favorite artists for inspiration, but you never know what kind of new and exciting of ideas you will get from artwork you’ve never seen before.

Go Outside of Your Comfort Zone

Often, our best ideas come to us when we go outside of our comfort zones. That’s why a great way to get inspired for your own art is to make something using a medium other than your usual. For example, if you typically paint, try putting together a collage instead. If you’re a sculptor, try drawing or photography. Don’t be afraid to mix things up—you don’t have to be good at creating in another medium, you just have to let it inspire you.

Just Create!

When you’re an artist, you can’t always wait for inspiration to strike. You must keep creating even when you are not feeling inspired. This is why even when you’re experiencing artist’s block, you should start making something even if you don’t know where you’re going with it. Don’t worry about making something good, just create! Sometimes the hardest part is getting started, and once you get past that hurdle, inspiration could strike along the way.
